FTL vs. LTL: How to Choose the Right Mode for Your Shipment
Weight, pallet count, transit time and fragility all affect the answer. Here is a simple framework our team uses every day.

Choosing between full truckload (FTL) and less-than-truckload (LTL) is one of the most common — and most expensive — decisions a shipper makes. The right choice depends on more than just size.
When LTL makes sense
- 1–6 pallets or under ~10,000 lbs
- Flexible delivery dates
- Sturdy, well-packaged freight that tolerates handling
When FTL is the better value
- 10+ pallets or 15,000+ lbs
- Time-sensitive or high-value freight
- Fragile goods that should not be re-handled
Don’t forget partial truckload
For mid-size shipments, a partial truckload often beats both: lower cost than FTL, fewer touches and no freight-class surprises compared with LTL.
